The Cincinnati Gilbert Five Axis Horizontal Boring Mill (S.N. A-4444-JRM) was purchased in 1984 to support NASA Lewis Research Center in its' leadership efforts of being a center of excellence in turbo machinery. It has a five foot cube work piece capacity and full five axis contouring capability. The machine tool has a 60 inch travel table with a built in 60 inch diameter turntable. The 27 gear multi speed head has a 5 inch spindle with 36 inches of travel and is mounted on a column which travels 24 inches horizontally and 60 inches vertically. A fifth axis 48 inch diameter turntable is mounted on the 60 inch turntable to attain full 5 axis articulation of the work piece. All axes are controlled by inductosyn scales for 0.0001 inch and 0.001 degree resolution movement. This combination of size, resolution, and articulation make this machine tool very unique and singularly capable of machining hardware for turbo machinery and other large complex accurate hardware. The spindle clock shows less than five man years of use so there is very little to no wear on the machine tool. A special foundation is required to accommodate the two main runway tables and all of the support hardware such as the spindle oil refrigeration unit, coolant reservoir, and the extensive relay and servo amplifier cabinets.
